Neural connectivity, music, and movement: a response to Pat Amos

چکیده

WHERE RHYTHMS COINCIDE? Pat Amos documents the power of the rhythmic moment in autism, connects it to current thinking in developmental psychology, and draws practical lessons for therapeutic intervention. One question therapists in practice may struggle with is convincing some parents and other professionals of the potential power of these types of interventions. As a movement and music therapist I recall a mother telling me about her recent visit to a prominent pediatric neuropsychiatrist. The neuropsychiatrist was once again recommending a regimen of heavy medication and behavioral therapy. The mother told her that she felt her son was making great progress through work with rhythm and movement. “That won’t hold,” said the neuropsychiatrist. Will it hold? Can a movement based intervention compete with a pharmaceutical one? The idea can meet with great skepticism. However, there is a strong argument to be made from neurobiological theory that a rhythmic intervention holds the potential to be at least as powerful as a chemical intervention, and the broader one’s investigation into neurobiology, the more the arguments for this view accumulate.

The Effect of Vibroacoustic Stimulation and Music on Fetal Movement

Introduction Fetal movement started at the 7th weeks of pregnancy and by the end of pregnancy will gradually be perfect and harmonious. Near-term fetuses can discriminate acoustic features, such as frequencies and spectra, and process complex auditory streams. In this study, we aimed to evaluate fatal movement in response to music and vibration stimulation. Materials and Methods This study is a...

Functional Brain Response to Emotional Muical Stimuli in Depression, Using INLA Approach for Approximate Bayesian Inference

Introduction: One of the vital skills which has an impact on emotional health and well-being is the regulation of emotions. In recent years, the neural basis of this process has been considered widely. One of the powerful tools for eliciting and regulating emotion is music. The Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC) is part of the emotional neural circuitry involved in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)....

Neural Correlates of Boredom in Music Perception

Introduction: Music can elicit powerful emotional responses, the neural correlates of which have not been properly understood. An important aspect about the quality of any musical piece is its ability to elicit a sense of excitement in the listeners. In this study, we investigated the neural correlates of boredom evoked by music in human subjects. Methods: We used EEG recording in nine sub...

The Effect of Music on Fetus Movement During Non-Stress Test

Introduction: To reduce mortality occurrence on the day of birth, it is recommended to evaluate the health of the fetus during pregnancy. The most widely used technique in most centers as the ideal screening for fetal health assessment is non-stress test. Due to the fact that reducing fetal movement is one of the immediate symptoms of fetal death, this study was conducted to determine the effec...

Rhythm and timing in autism: learning to dance

In recent years, a significant body of research has focused on challenges to neural connectivity as a key to understanding autism. In contrast to attempts to identify a single static, primarily brain-based deficit, children and adults diagnosed with autism are increasingly perceived as out of sync with their internal and external environments in dynamic ways that must also involve operations of...
